Sexual Orientation

Like cisgender people, transgender people may be sexually attracted to people of the same gender or different gender(s), or we may not be attracted to others sexually. Trans people may identify as lesbian, bisexual, gay, queer, 2 Spirited, Questioning, Asexual, Pansexual, or any other sexual orientation. Some people identify with several letters in the LGBT2SQQIA* acronym. For example a transgender woman who is sexually attracted to other women may identify as a lesbian. A transgender person who is attracted to people of all genders may identify as queer, trans, and pansexual.

For Educators

Many people wonder when it is appropriate to use the word queer. Here is a brief summary of how a conversation about this might go: “Is the word queer an insult?” “It didn’t used to be, then it did, then activists reclaimed it, so it is not anymore, but because it used to be it can still be insulting to some people.” “When is it ok to use it?” “If you are queer.”

Hear people talk first-hand about their identity and what the word “queer” means to them in this short video.
